TURNER SYNDROME

Definition

Turner Syndrome is a genetic disorder that only affects females. Turner Syndrome only affects females because it is caused by a partial or entire deletion of an 'X' chromosome. This disorder is characterized by the shortened height, and heart issues, which can sometimes be severe. People with Turner Syndrome also suffer from a lot of issues with their reproductive system due to the missing (or partially missing) X chromosome. Turner Syndrome is incurable but there are many hormone therapies that can be used to help with not only the growth aspect, but also with the reproductive issues so that women with Turner Syndrome might be able to one day reproduce.

Instructional Strategies

Women with Turner Syndrome typically do not have any educational setbacks, although some might experience difficulties with maths, most can go on to have long educational careers. In other words, Turner Syndrome itself generally does not pose any specific educational obstacles. Teachers should be mindful of their students with Turner Syndrome as they might be subjected to teasing or bullying because of their physical appearance.
