SELECTIVE MUTISM

Definition

Selective Mutism is a rare disease that affects children. It is a type of anxiety disorder. Most children who have Selective Mutism also have social phobia. Symptoms last more than a month. Children may freeze and be still, others will be able to communicate with nods and movements. (Psychology Today, 2018)

Instructional Strategies

Differentiate instruction. Do not expect the child to be able to present or speak in class. Talk with the school social worker and psychologist about needs specific to the child with selective mutism. The child can be evaluated for an IEP by a specialist.
