SENSORY PROCESSING DISORDER

Definition
  • Definition: is a condition in which the brain has trouble receiving and responding to information that comes in through the senses.

    • Oversensitive to things in environment,

    • Sounds may be overwhelming

    • Certain textures may cause irritation

    • Hear/touch/taste; may affect one or multiple

    • Over or under- responsive

Instructional Strategies

  • Provide alternative seating for texture purposes

  • Provide a room where the light can be adjusted

  • Provide background noise or lack thereof depending on the students

  • Provide an opportunity for the scent of the room to change to meet the childs’ needs

  • Post a daily schedule with words and pictures

  • Provide number/alphabet guides for children on their desk

  • Be careful that there are not too many distractions in the classroom

  • Establish eye contact when talking to students

  • Warn students when a loud noise may occur

  • Help students stay organized

  • Simple/ step-by-step directions

  • Be consistent throughout the classroom

  • Prepare students for transitions

  • Allow students to take “breaks” when needed to prevent or help with over stimulation

  • Encourage students to be active when given the opportunity

  • Accommodations should differ depending on the needs of each individual student

  • 2009- 1 in 6 children (16%) will have SPD

  • 2011- Risk Factors include; low birth weight, premature birth, prenatal complications, maternal stress/illness, maternal use of medications, delivery complications

  • 2009- individuals with SPD are 4x as likely to have internalizing problems
